Our Story
In December 2024, I attended a science camp, hoping to learn biotechnology skills valuable for research. At the camp, my partner working on the experiments with me was a deaf student. He was very eager to learn the biotechnology concepts and was extremely passionate about science. However, as the program continued, the student became increasingly discouraged due to no instructions in ASL. He was completely relying on spoken English and videos to get a better understanding of the concepts. My limited knowledge of American Sign Language, specifically fingerspelling, helped him with translating some of the abstract concepts. Witnessing this passionate student’s experience showed me firsthand the barriers sensory-impaired students face in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM). Inspired to learn more, I interviewed my cousin who faces visual impairment about her personal opinions and experiences learning STEAM. Learning about her struggles motivated me to address this disparity in education. This kickstarted the founding of my nonprofit, Pathways to Potential, to remove the barriers impeding sensory-impaired students’ experience in STEAM.
